Marriage and heart proposal photo shoots have really become popular. Now that you have the ring, it’s time to book a photo shoot! But before you do, there are a few things to know.
I have a little guide to help you get magical shots the first time. This photo shoot I did on the shores of the Caribbean Sea.
How to decide on your style
First, it’s very helpful to find your style… But how? Turn to the internet! Save your favorite photos to your Instagram collection and/or create a Pinterest board. Look for similarities in all the images to try to identify your personal hallmarks.
Find “the one” photographer.
One of the most important pieces of the puzzle is finding the right photographer. If you have a vision of muted + pastel colors, but your photographer leans toward brighter + lighter colors, you may not be a good match.
An easy way to find your photographer is to find out who is behind the lens of your favorite photos! You probably have saved photos that you look at and think “wow, I want one too.” Find out who took those pictures. We don’t know a photographer who doesn’t love to travel, so it’s worth considering them, even if they’re not local.
If you have a local photographer you’d like to work with, give them an idea of your vision (if you have one) before you book a date.
Once you’ve booked your man, think of the engagement as a date or “trial date” between you and the photographer. You’ll find out if you get along and if you like their photographic style, which is very important for the main event.
Repeating the basics.
Before you go any further, decide what you are going to use the photos for. Will you be printing them out ? Will you use them for your wedding website? Or do you just want a few shots for yourself + your family? Or do you want to blow up Instagram? You’ll have an easier time thinking through the concept when you find the answer.
What to wear to the photo shoot?
Here’s the question. The answer is simple and complicated: dress like you would in normal life. If a red dress will get your attention, why not! But if stiletto heels and a tight dress are not your style in the real world, don’t force what you don’t have.
Location also determines your outfits, so consider the tone of your surroundings.
Where to go for a photo shoot?
And speaking of location – how do you choose it? I suggest thinking about who you are as a couple and moving forward.
Make a list of your memorable locations, such as your first date, the first place you said “I love you,” etc. If you’re totally confused, talk to your photographer, who may have precious ideas.
Have an engagement photo shoot at the wedding location, if you’ve already chosen one. You’ll have a chance to better explore the area before your wedding day.
When is the best time to have a photo shoot?
If you’re looking at a schedule leading up to the wedding, the earlier the better. It depends on how you plan to use the photos, but if you need them for anything other than an Instagram blast, you’ll want to get your photos back as soon as possible.
And speaking of time of day, is there anything better than golden hour! You’ll definitely want to avoid the harsh afternoon light. Early morning isn’t a bad idea if there aren’t too many people in the location. This is best discussed with your photographer, who will have all the professional information.
How do you make a photo shoot magical?
When it comes to a photo shoot, the more “you” it is you, the better. Don’t worry so much about poses.
Don’t worry so much about how to take a particular shot. Engagement photos can really serve you well in preparation for your wedding day. Relax, have fun, and the magic is sure to happen!
